A miniature paintover is a digital art process where I enhance your miniature photo with hand-painted lighting, effects, and atmosphere. It turns a snapshot into a cinematic scene closer to illustration than basic photo editing.
Paintovers, Explained
A paintover is a digital art technique that began in the concept art and film industry. Studios used it to bring ideas to life quickly by painting over 3D renders or photos and adding new lighting, textures, and atmosphere.
At Artists Empire, I’ve adapted paintovers for the miniature hobby. Instead of concept sketches, I start with your painted mini. Using digital tools, I add cinematic lighting, smoke, sparks, muzzle flashes, glowing runes, and other story-driven effects. These are painted in by hand and blended with the photo, not applied through filters.
When needed, I combine photo elements in a process sometimes called photobashing to build a scene, then refine it with digital brushwork. The result is closer to digital illustration than photo editing — a piece of art built on your miniature that makes your model look like it belongs in a living scene.

Paintover FAQ
What makes a paintover different from regular photo editing?
A paintover goes beyond filters or touch-ups. I digitally paint in lighting, smoke, sparks, and scenery so your miniature photo looks like a finished piece of artwork.
Do I need a professional photo for a paintover?
No. A clear phone photo works fine. The main thing is that the miniature is in focus with decent lighting.
Can a paintover include extra elements like backgrounds or effects?
Yes. Paintovers often add atmospheric backgrounds, muzzle flashes, glowing runes, or even environmental effects like fog or sparks — all painted in digitally.
Is a paintover still my miniature?
Absolutely. The paintover builds on your painted model — your work is always the centerpiece, and the effects enhance the scene around it.
